Usha, the Indian brand known most for its range of domestic appliances, sponsored a siat khnam (traditional archery) event in Mawsynram on Saturday.

Organised by the dorbar shnong of Kmawanrum, the event was held at Madan Lum Symper in Mawsynram in collaboration with Usha’s partner NGO, Bethany Society.

Over 100 contestants tried their luck and skill. They were divided into two groups – U-18 and those above 18.

The first round saw the top 30 qualify for the second and final round. To win, each archer got a chance to shoot five arrows and earned points based on where the arrows landed.

The junior category was won by Teiborlang Sun, with Mebanteilang Nongbet second and Aibankerlang Kharshiing third. Mawkordor Umdor was also recognised for being the youngest participant.

The senior category was won by K Rani, followed by RT Sun in second and David Khasain in third place. Briding Mawlong won a prize for being the oldest archer.

Winners took home prizes donated by Usha International.

“Supporting events like the siat khnam allows us to reinforce our commitment to promoting sports at the grassroots level,” Usha International’s head of sports initiatives and associations, Komal Mehra, said. “Indigenous games like this not only promote a healthy and active lifestyle amongst the youth, they also inculcate in them life skills both physical and mental. We commend the bonhomie and sportsman spirit these players brought to the ground.”
