Meghalaya will host the inaugural edition of the Senior Nationals North East Zonal Championship for men and women in Shillong from December 16 to 19.
Six states affiliated to the Basketball Federation of India – Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura – will be taking part.
The purpose of the new format is to ensure the best participation from the various zones and help the lesser known states to strive to be part of the main championship, members of the Meghalaya Basketball Association said today at a press conference.
A couple of the bigger basketball names who will be taking part are Lalrina Renthlei of Mizoram, a current national team player, and Birender Hudda of Assam, a former India basketballer.
The matches will take place at St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School. The first game will be at 8pm on December 16. Entry for spectators will be subject to government Covid-19 protocols and restrictions.
