A coke-laden truck bearing registration number AS 01 DC 9723 while heading towards Assam from Shallang in West Khasi Hills capsized on reaching a sharp turn in Lai Mer, Upper Shillong today resulting in huge traffic jam.
No one was injured during the incident that took place at around 7:45 am, police officials said.
A video of the truck that went viral shows how the truck capsized on reaching a sharp turn as people have expressed concerns of the dangers that the incident could have had on commuters and pedestrians.
Commuters were also angry as vehicular traffic was heavily impacted and snarls were reported from several parts of the city after the incident as many reached late to their destinations. Eventually, police diverted traffic heading through interior roads in Lai Mer as the truck and the spilled over coke were later cleared.
While police claimed that the truck was transporting coke with a valid challan and was not overloaded, people who witnessed the video have raised doubt and even suspected that illegal transportation and mining of coal is happening in the coal rich areas of the State with the onset of winter.
