The National Peoples’ Party (NPP) has named more than 100 people in their FIR that was filed last night leading to the Congress crying foul over what they said was a case of harassment of their supporters.

A clash between supporters of both the Congress and the NPP took place at the village of Garodubi under Rajabala constituency yesterday. While the matter of who started the fight is still unclear, there were 21 people who received minor injuries, 11 from the NPP and 10 from the Congress.

At least three vehicles were also damaged while the house of one Hasan Ali was pelted with stones leading to major damage. Stones were allegedly pelted by both parties involved.

While the Congress filed an FIR on the incident at the Rajabala OP naming 24 people, including Hasan Ali, the NPP FIR named over 100 people in their police complaint.

After the incident, police as well as election officials rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner and DEO, Ram Singh said the matter would be investigated by IAS officer, Jagdish Chelani with a report to be submitted within 10 days.

“A magisterial inquiry has been ordered and will be completed quickly. We have received complaints by the Congress and have assured a completely unbiased investigation. The same assurance was made by the SP as well,” said the DC.

Meanwhile the Congress candidate from Rajabala, Hasina Yasmin Mondal, late last night, shot off a complaint to the Returning Officer alleging that the supporters of her party were named in the FIR by the NPP despite them not even being at the spot when the alleged incident took place.

“The FIR by the NPP is arbitrary and names over 100 people who were not even there when the incident took place. These people are respectable local leaders and businessmen and their names have been included with an ulterior motive, just to defame them,” claimed Hasina in her complaint.

This afternoon, senior Congress leader and DCC president, Zenith Sangma met the DC, SP as well as election officials before submitting another complaint to the RO alleging that the action by the police was biased.

“The action by the police is one- sided with only the NPP FIR being worked on and Congress supporters and workers being targeted. Till the filing of this complaint, no action has been taken on the FIR filed by the Congress,” he alleged.

“On the contrary, the fabricated, baseless and false allegations by the NPP in their FIR against a few leaders of the INC, has been acted on. This action by the police has vitiated the atmosphere and has political ramifications on ‘free and fair’ elections,” he asserted.

Hasina in her complaint too had made similar allegations on the police action.

The Congress has demanded immediate action on their complaint so that an atmosphere allowing free and fair elections is maintained.
