Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong, in collaboration with Geetanjali Dance Academy today organised a Polio Awareness Walk to celebrate the World Polio Day.
The walk was flagged-off by Rotarian Kishan Tibrewalla, Assistant Governor, Rotary International District 3240 in presence of the Club President Rotarian Monica Chanda.
The awareness walk was joined by Rotarians, students and notable civilians. During the walk, the participants held banners with slogans and artworks aiming to work together and eradicate polio from the face of the planet.
Rotary spearheaded the campaign at a time when there were over 1,000 polio cases a day in 125 countries, paralysing and even killing children.
Over the last 35 years, Rotary members, working with communities around the world, have contributed more than US$ 2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to the fight to end polio. Today, the number of cases is down by 99.9 per cent.
The club has thanked the office of Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills and Police Department for necessary permissions and arrangements. It also thanked all the participants who participated in the walk and made it successful.
