The border committee constituted by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to stand by documents produced by traditional heads such as the Raids, Himas and rangbah shnongs as well as by private land owners, who have land along the disputed Meghalaya-Assam border.
According to KHADC CEM Titosstarwell Chyne, the district council will go through the land documents available with the traditional heads to defend the land already encroached by Assam and these will be submitted to the border level talks between the chief ministers of both the states.
“It is only through valid land documents that we can prove land ownership and it is then that we can stand firm in our fight against encroachment,” Chyne told reporters after the meeting.
He also informed that the district council is under the process of collecting all the land documents from the traditional chiefs and some have already submitted them.
The meeting held at the Science Hall, Nongpoh was chaired by Chyne which was also attended by MDCs of both the ruling and the opposition which included Charles Marngar, Macdalyne Sawkmie Mawlong, Balajied Rani, Victor Rani, Grace Mary Kharpura, Banjop Pynrope and R.R Kharbuki attended the committee meeting along with traditional chiefs of Hima Mylliem, Raid Marwet, Hima Nongspung, Hima Jirang and Hima Nongkhlaw.
