The villagers of Rongmesek, Ri-Bhoi, celebrated World Tourism Day today but have requested that they be helped with suitable infrastructure that would help them promote their village to visitors.
Within the vicinity of Rongmesek lie wonderful tourist locales, such as Phrut Dak Late, Mawkyndur Peak and waterfalls that have already been highlighted by Meghalaya Tourism.
However, the Rongmesek Tourism Promotion Society is hoping that the state government provides more infrastructure to drive tourism forwards and be a boon to the locals.
The headman, Abithius Taro, presided over the celebration today where a traditional dance was performed by the local youths. Former headman, Albinus Timung, who played a pivotal role in getting the village recognised as a tourist spot, highlighted his mission and vision to promote tourism for the betterment of the local people in terms of economy and employment opportunities.
Tmung expressed gratitude and thankfulness to the state government and Tourism Department for allotting funds to promote the village, without which none of this could have been possible.
However, the village still requires a road to Mawkyndur, a footpath at the lake, streetlights, etc.
