Two people were killed and five others injured in an explosion triggered by thunder at a stone quarry in Chibra village under Ri Bhoi district today.
The incident happened at around 3 pm when thunder struck the explosive device, which was used in the stone quarry, killing two labourers at the site, sources said.
The victims have been identified as Bahar Ali and Suraj Ali both of Barpeta in Assam. Those injured were Sayed Ali of Barpeta in Assam, Zipson Sangma, Hamen Marak, Raston and Sanjoy Sangma of Jermang village.
Among five labourers who were injured in the incident, one is said to be critical and was immediately shifted to GMCH Hospital, Guwahati for medical treatment.
Police from Pilangkata outpost who rushed to the site confirmed that the explosion was triggered by thunder. As per reports, the stone quarry owned by one Commission Khriam was operating illegally in the area.
