The Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has recommended North West Khasi Hills to be the name of the new district based around Mairang, which is expected to officially come into being next month.
Apart from Ri-Bhoi, all of Meghalaya’s existing districts have some compass point in their name. What will be the 12th district in the state is to be carved out of West Khasi Hills.
In a letter to the Speaker of Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, the working president of the HSPDP, KP Pangiang, said that the party is thankful to the state government for its decision to upgrade Mairang civil sub-division into a full-fledged district.
“The vision of the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, to serve the people by bringing the maximum governance to the people with a new district is much welcome for the interest of West Khasi Hills in particular,” he said.
