North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has threatened to boycott the celebrations of Meghalaya’s 50th year of statehood on the ground that the state government has not addressed pending issues, such as the interstate boundary dispute with Assam.
Nongrum, the lone legislator from the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement, said that the Assam government is encroaching on Meghalaya territory every day in whatever way it can while the Meghalayans living along the border suffer the consequences.
Although assurances have been given that the issues will be resolved, the ground reality does not match the lofty promises, he maintained.
“As a concerned citizen, MLA, and the President of KHNAM, I think we don’t want a celebration but we want a solution and I urge the public to oppose the 50 years of statehood celebration and to boycott it as a gift to the government for its betrayal towards the citizens,” he said.
He maintained that he will not stop fighting and follow up on issues that have been pending right from the achievement of statehood in 1972 that have an impact not only on this generation but will also affect the future generations if the government continues to take things for granted.
