The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo, passed an order today forbidding landlords from forcefully evicting tenants who have been unable to pay their rent due to the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing lockdown.
In the order, Laloo said that this was necessitated after several reports were received of tenants being turfed out of their rented properties.
Landlords must “give proper concession and time for payment, so as not to cause difficulties to people during such a time,” the DC said.
She also encouraged employers to continue to support domestic staff who are unable to attend work because of the lockdown in the district and not put pressure on them to work during this time or deduct their wages for not doing so. Laloo also encouraged domestic help to get vaccinated and to contact their local Rangbah Shnong if they do not have the requisite identification.
