The Mawshynrut unit of the Khasi Students Union donated PPE, gloves and masks to accredited social health activists (ASHAs) at Seinduli sub-centre yesterday.
The materials were handed over to K Nongshli, president of the ASHA Union of Mawshynrut Block, in the presence of O Kharbani, general secretary of the ASHA Union.
The KSU said that it donated the materials after hearing of the many problems faced by the ASHAs who don’t have basic gear to protect them when they visit villages and meet people during the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the pressure group, there are only 14 doctors to look after 1.2 lakh people in the district. That gives a doctor-patient ratio of 1:8500 instead of 1:1000 as the World Health Organisation recommends.
