An unprecedented surge of 906 new Covid-19 cases was reported in Meghalaya today, with 574 in East Khasi Hills alone. There were also another 19 coronavirus-related fatalities, taking the total for May to 184, which is more than the state bore in all the months prior combined (171).
Seventeen fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures today, with one each in North Garo Hills and Ri-Bohi. Fifteen out of the 19 had Covid-19 pneumonia listed as a cause of death.
The deceased were identified as Boldwin Sumer (66) of Umsawnongkharai, Sawdong Kurbah (53) of Mawlai Mawkynroh Umshing, Anthony Thangkhiew (55) of Madanrting, Wonderful Star Ryndem (71) of Kench’s Trace, Mohan Roy (54) of Nongmynsong, Aisha Khatoon (52) of Mawbah, Ralinda Rynjah (50) of Laitlyngkot, Dhireshwar Chakravarty (68) of Nongpoh, Saraswati Chettri (69) of Golf Links, Rota Warjri (55) of Umlyngka, Apkyrmenlang Syiemlieh (31) of Mawkyrwat, Klo Khongji (66) of Pynursla, Plawer N Marak (54) of Dainadubi, Hesding Lyngdoh (48) of Nartiang, Justin War (74) of Mawlai Kynton Massar, Joyce Blue Lyngdoh (73) of Mission Compound in Shillong, Vicky Biswa (36) of Dhanketi, Ajay Rai (56) of Upper Shillong and Swinda Mawlong (75) of Mawlai Nonglum.
East Khasi Hills accounted for a massive 575 of today’s reported infections, including one among returnees, six among armed forces/paramilitaries, 217 high-risk contacts, 82 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), 39 through screening, 33 severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), three health workers, six police personnel, 32 in Nongthymmai, 30 in Mawlai, 14 in Upper Shillong and 112 in various other neighbourhood clusters.
East Jaintia Hills reported 64 new cases (37 high-risk, 12 returnees, six ILIs, six screening, three factory cluster), West Garo Hills 56 (13 ILIs, 13 screening, 12 in Chanmari, seven in Darenggre, five returnees, four in Phulbari, one health worker, one high-risk), West Jaintia Hills 54 (34 high-risk, 16 ILIs, two screening, one police, one returnee), South West Garo Hills 41 (18 high-risk, 11 screening, 10 ILIs, two health workers), West Khasi Hills 31 (14 screening, nine in Nongkasen, six ILIs, two high-risk), Ri-Bhoi 28 (14 in North Eastern Space Applications Centre, 13 ILIs, one high-risk), South Garo Hills 20 (10 high-risk, nine screening, four ILIs), North Garo Hills 19 (18 high-risk, one police), South West Khasi Hills 10 (seven high-risk, two health workers, one ILI) and East Garo Hills nine (six ILIs, one high-risk, one SARI, one screening).
There were also a record 470 recoveries today – 281 in East Khasi Hills, 35 in Ri-Bhoi, 34 in East Jaintia Hills, 27 in South Garo Hills, 26 in South West Garo Hills, 19 in West Garo Hills, 17 in West Jaintia Hills, 14 in West Khasi Hills, nine in East Garo Hills and eight in North Garo Hills.
There are now 5,332 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 3,076 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 674, West Garo Hills 442, West Jaintia Hills 360, South West Garo Hills 198, East Jaintia Hills 212 and West Khasi Hills 168.
In all, Meghalaya has had 24,872 Covid-19 cases, of which 5,332 are active, 19,185 have recovered and 355 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 77.13 percent. The fatality rate has increased to 1.43 percent. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 613.57. More than 4.15 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in the state as of today.
