Though happy with appointment of teachers who cleared the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET), yet teachers have opined that recruitment process was not uniform.
Recently, the State government announced appointment of 1320 Lower Primary school teachers and 99 Upper Primary school teachers.
“We are thankful to the government for the recruitment but the recruitment which is being done sub-division-wise are not at all uniform,” a teacher stated.
Teachers said, in Baghmara, Resubelpara and Williamnagar the result was declared on February 6 and by March the teachers have joined duty and proceeded with the course and syllabus and drew their salaries while in Nongpoh, Nongstoiñ, Jowai, etc the result was declared within February 4-5 but the teachers have just joined their duties in the third-fourth week of April 2021.
Hover, in East Khasi Hills Shillong, 17 teachers in the Upper Primary schools joined duty a few days back, while the recruitment of the 226 lower primary teachers is yet to know, the teachers added.
Informing that most of the interview for other sub-divisions was conducted before December last year, the teachers said that in Shillong, the interview was conducted in January 2021 and the result was declared on February 28. “But the recruitment took very long while the interview results for the upper primary in Tura has not even been declared,” they added.
Stating the subdivision-wise recruitment of the teachers is not practicable, the teachers further said that the posting approval that comes from the Director of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) is not uniform and partial.
“Whenever we approach the authority concern they would always give the reason of rationalisation in the delay of recruitment of the teachers in various sub-divisions especially East Khasi Hills while in some subdivision the recruitment is very fast,” they said, adding, that the government should monitor the functioning of the DSEL and DSEO and see that these departments coordinate.
They also alleged that staff in the DSEO are seldom available in their office before afternoon which might be another reason for all the delays.
