The National People’s Party (NPP) used money power to secure the support of enough MDCs to form the new executive committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Congress MLA Zenith Sangma claimed today.
The Congress finished as the largest party in last week’s GHADC polls with 12 seats but the NPP, with 11, managed to form the EC with the support of three independents and the lone Garo National Council MDC.
“We fell short by three MDCs and could not form the EC in the GHADC. We approached the few MDCs who were elected as independents and from other political parties but the way the NPP leadership approached them is very dangerous. They promised a huge amount of money for their support, something that we don’t do,” said Sangma.
The Rangsakona legislator thanked the people for reposing their faith in the Congress and said that it will “constructively” sit in opposition.
The swearing-in ceremony for the newly-elected MDCs took place in Tura today.
Sangma added that the Congress met today to work out how and why some of their candidates were unable to win and introspected on the issue.
