East Khasi Hills district police arrested a motorcycle thief while four others managed to escape from Wahkdait near Pynursla on Wednesday morning.
The arrested man has been identified as Pynshai Rani, a history-sheeter involved in many robberies, Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said.
Nongtnger said police intercepted two stolen motorcycles bearing registration number OD-04-E-9447 and ML-05 G 1066 at Wahkdait and on seeing the police, four persons managed to flee towards the jungle leaving the bikes behind. Following a pursuit, Rani was arrested.
“Efforts are on to nab the rest of the culprits and their abettors,” the SP said.
Nongtnger said there have been an increasing number of motorcycle thefts in Shillong city which are suspected to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
