Hailstones that accompanied heavy rain damaged more than 100 homes in the Umden area of Ri-Bhoi yesterday evening, with local residents raising serious concerns over the unprecedented scale of the phenomenon.
Speaking to this reporter, the headman of Diwon village, Kyrshan Timung, said that the storm had damaged homes with tin roofs as well as standing crops.
“More than 100 houses were damaged only at Diwon village and the adjoining area of Umden Nongtluh,” said Tmung.
Some families were forced to move out of their homes as the rainwater poured in through the holes left by the hail.
Timung urged the district administration and the local representatives to take up this matter seriously as many local residents need immediate assistance from the government for their damaged houses and crops.
