      Another 2 virus-related deaths registered in Meghalaya

      Two more Covid-related fatalities were recorded in Meghalaya today, taking the total death toll in the state to 133.

      Toniak Marbaniang (72), of Laitumkhrah, Shillong, died in his home yesterday morning. Cause of death was refractory shock with Covid-19 pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertention and hypothyroidism. This was the 108th Covid death in East Khasi Hills, where the fatality rate is 1.35 percent.

      Sufola Das (47), of Tikrikilla was declared brought dead at Tura Civil Hospital on December 14. Diagnosis was a history of Type 2 diabetes with hypertension and Covid-19. This was the 16th Covid death in West Garo Hills, where the fatality rate is 0.95 percent.

      Twenty-two coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded in the state this month. Overall, the statewide fatality rate is now at 1.02 percent.

      Meanwhile, there were 65 new infections recorded today and 66 recoveries.

      Of the new cases 57 were in East Khasi Hills, six in West Jaiñtia Hills and one each in West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.

      Six of the new infections in East Khasi Hills were health workers, while five were among armed forces/paramilitaries and five among returnees. There were also several cases in various clusters, including six in Nongthymmai, four in Mawlai Nonglum, three in Laban, three in Mawprem, three in Nongmynsong, two in Laitumkhrah, two in Madanrting, and two in Mawlai Nongmali. In West Jaiñtia Hills four were in the Dulong cluster.

      The recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (29), West Jaiñtia Hills (12), West Garo Hills (10), Ri-Bhoi (eight), East Garo Hills (two), North Garo Hills (two), West Khasi Hills (two) and East Jaiñtia Hills (one).

      In all, Meghalaya has had 13,072 Covid-19 cases, of which 687 are active, 12,252 have recovered and 133 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has increased to 93.73 percent.

      The Health Department also informed that around 900 Covid-19 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours.
