Mawshynrut MLA Gigur Myrthong today said that the detailed project report (DPR) for the 35 kilometre Nongstoin-Maweit road in West Khasi Hills is in its final stages and will be sanctioned by December.

Speaking to Highland Post, Myrthong said that there are some minor formalities left before the final DPR is submitted to the World Bank for scrutiny.

“Once the scrutiny is done by the World Bank on the final DPR the estimated proposal of approximately not more than Rs 100 crore will be sanctioned for the road,” he said. “We want to submit an ideal DPR so that during its final scrutiny the scheme will not be rejected by the World Bank.”

In this regard the MLA has met with the Chief Engineer, Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, he also informed that the sanction from the North Eastern Council for the road in Athiabari, amounting to Rs 117 crore, will be released in December.

Lack of road coverage in the Maweit area has caused extreme hardships to the people, many of whom who spoke to Highland Post yesterday criticised the government for.

“About 30 villages are dependent on this 35km road that has been left unattended for the past 50 years and many untoward incidents have occurred while traveling, especially while taking the sick and those in need of medical attention to various health centres,” the residents stated even as they claimed that most of the organic vegetables sold at Nongstoin are cultivated by the farmers from the area who have to face great inconveniences traveling along the road.
