The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has changed the landscape of education in the state and will continue to work towards improving it, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said yesterday.
In barbed remarks obviously targeting the previous Congress-led government, Rymbui extolled the virtues of the current administration led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, saying, “This government has done much more than any other government who had the privilege to serve the state for more than six-seven years at the helms of affairs.”
Rymbui was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new Capt Williamson A Sangma Memorial College in Baghmara, South Garo Hills.
“Some people say that we lack direction,” he said. “Let me assert that we have direction and a mission to serve our people. We are answerable to our people and not to those who just like to criticise.”
He told the gathering that in 2008 three government colleges were provincialized but no effort was made by the previous administration to ensure that infrastructure and other educational facilities and services were improved.
“The MDA government, under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma, has been working with a mission to ensure that we see a transformational change in the state,” Rymbui further said while also lauding the role of MLAs Rakkam A Sangma and Samuel Sangma for their dedication towards their work to better development facilities in South Garo Hills.
Recalling his first visit to the district in 2018 after formation of the MDA government, Rymbui said, “The road was so bad that my police team had to push my car many times while we negotiated the bumpy roads. I am very happy to see that within this short period the roads in the district are improving and will further improve.”
The new building of the Capt Williamson A Sangma Memorial College will be completed by 2022. The minister also informed that, subject to approval from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), post-graduation courses in History and Education will be introduced at Tura Government College and U Kiang Nangbah College, Sohra. He also said that 40 new residential model schools (EMRS) are coming up in the state, which will transform the education scenario throughout Meghalaya.
