Two days after her husband had passed away from Covid-19, Merilyn Pakyntein passed away from the disease in Shillong yesterday.

Pakyntein (72) was a resident of Qualapatty. She was found to be Covid positive yesterday and died the same day at home. On Tuesday her husband, Morning Niangti (80) had died of Covid-19 in hospital. He had been admitted to hospital on October 9.

There was one other fatality from the virus reported today, that of Wailin Syiemlieh (65) of Langtor Mairang. She had been referred to Shillong Civil Hospital from Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital on October 6 and found to have Covid-19. She expired early today morning. Syiemlieh had been diagnosed with Type 1 respiratory failure due to Covid-19 pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome and cancer.

The death toll from the disease in Meghalaya is now 75, with two dozen deaths this month alone.

Meanwhile, there were 139 new infections today, with 90 recoveries. That took the number of active cases of Covid-19 in the state to 2,492, with recoveries standing at 5,736. There have been 8,303 Covid cases in Meghalaya since the first was diagnosed in April.

Today’s new infections were divided between East Khasi Hills (71), Ri-Bhoi (21), West Garo Hills (12), West Khasi Hills (12), East Garo Hills (seven), East Jaiñtia Hills (seven), West Jaiñtia Hills (six), South Garo Hills (two) and North Garo Hills (one).

Ten of those new infections in West Khasi Hills were among police personnel and the district has now grown to 19 active infections from seven before today.

Today’s recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (37), Ri-Bhoi (25), West Garo Hills (16), East Garo Hills (four), South Garo Hills (three), South West Garo Hills (two), East Jaiñtia Hills (one), South West Khasi Hills (one) and West Jaiñtia Hills (one).
