Representatives of Ka Sur U Paidbah Ka Bri Hynniewtrep met with Meghalaya Congress President Celestine Lyngdoh today to press for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Led by its Chairman, Rastingwell Thabah, and General Secretary Egenstar Kurkalang, the delegation met with Lyngdoh to communicate the body’s request to Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala, who is also from the Congress.
“As a teacher teaching Khasi in the university for almost 35 years, I can rightly say that the Khasi language has grown and is mature enough to be recognized in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and the state government should not turn a blind eye to this issue,” Sur U Paidbah member and North-Eastern Hill University professor, Streamlet Dkhar, told reporters.
The pressure group had also sent a letter to Pala on September 13 to urge him to a table a motion in Parliament for the inclusion of Khasi, but this did not materialize.
“The state Congress President has assured us that MP Vincent Pala will hopefully take up the matter in the next Lok Sabha session,” she added.
