Shillong, Nov 7: Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, along with PWD officials and village headmen, on Friday surveyed a new 8-km Nongriniang-Nongtnger road, a project that could end more than 40 years of waiting for people of 13 villages in the Warsan Lyngdoh area.
The survey started from Nongriniang and followed the self-built track used for years by truckers carrying wood, coal and other resources, crossing the Phot Phra River to Nongtnger.
The proposed road will connect Nongriniang, Nongtnger, Puinskei, Nongtynniam, Nongmalang, Nonglangmendia, New Nongtnger, Mawkynphor, Mawiawlang, Nongbah Jynrin, Mawthabah, Langurlieh and Langjarain.
Speaking after the survey, Marwein said villagers had reached out to him after decades of waiting. He said he had tried to get the existing Wahkaji-Nongtnger-Mawthabah road blacktopped, but it belongs to the KHADC.
“I have requested the district council many times to hand over that road to PWD so we can make it proper, but till now KHADC did not give the road. Every year I spent lakhs from my pocket to repair it, but since we cannot blacktop, it did not last and people kept suffering,” Marwein stated.
He said a new alignment from Nongriniang was therefore needed as a permanent solution, and expressed hope the road would soon become a reality as landowners have promised to donate land for construction.
