Shillong, Nov 3: PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak on Tuesday said recent water pipeline bursts in Shillong were linked to pressure testing under Phase III of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme and not to technical defects.
Reacting to leakages reported from several parts of the city, including Mawpat, Marak said the damage had been repaired.
He admitted such incidents could raise questions on quality of work but said they were part of testing and had been addressed.
On complaints of repeated digging of blacktopped roads, Marak said PHE was coordinating with PWD and pointed out that Shillong lacks a planned underground utility network, unlike Western cities, making excavation unavoidable.
He said construction under GSWSS Phase III is largely complete but distribution network work is pending. The deadline for completion is March 2027.
