Shillong, Nov 2: Shillong-based folk-fusion band Da-La-Riti unveiled its EP ‘Her Sha Ka Thong’, marking a milestone in its journey to preserve and promote Khasi musical heritage.
The EP was released by Principal Secretary FR Kharkongor and ICCR Zonal Director Munish Singh, in the presence of music icons Lou Majaw, Rudy Wahlang, Kit Shangpliang and Daminot Wankhar.
Led by singer-songwriter Dalariti Gratel Kharnaior, the band said the title, which signifies striving towards one’s goal, reflects its resilience and commitment to sustaining Khasi cultural identity through music.
In his address, Kharkongor appreciated the soulful music of Da-La-Riti and said the release would pave the way for folk and traditional musicians to reach global audiences.
The event also saw participation from artist-owned platform Goongoonalo, which promotes artist empowerment through rights management and distribution.
Co-founded by Javed Akhtar, Shankar Mahadevan and tech entrepreneur Sridhar Ranganathan and led by CEO Sherley Singh, Goongoonalo brings together music distribution, discovery, fan engagement, analytics and earnings visibility in one place.
Singh said a song is only the beginning of an artist’s journey and the platform was created to help artists share music with right credits, reach listeners, connect with fans and explore performance and collaboration opportunities while retaining ownership.
“Our commitment is to make reported earnings, deductions and payments transparent and traceable,” she said, adding that rights and payments will be governed by specific agreements with no assumption of ownership transfer.
Through its initiative G Amplifier, the platform will offer practical guidance and on-ground support to help artists from Meghalaya take their music further.
Goongoonalo’s model allows independent artists to release original music in regional languages including Khasi, Garo and Jaintia, organise their catalogue under one artist profile and build direct fan relationships.
As part of the programme, Da-La-Riti also felicitated over 25 young versatile folk and traditional artistes for their contribution to indigenous music.
