Shillong, Oct 16: The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) has issued a detailed traffic advisory for the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations in the city, outlining special traffic regulations and parking restrictions to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians during the festive period.
Festivities will be observed from October 17 to 20, culminating in idol immersion procession on October 21.
According to the advisory issued by Hari Prasanth MR, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, an increase in vehicular and pedestrian traffic is anticipated across Shillong during the celebrations.
To manage the expected rush, the STP has imposed sector-wise “No Entry” restrictions at several key junctions and roads across Sadar, Laban, Lumdiengjri, Rynjah and Laitumkhrah sectors. Vehicles will be diverted through alternative routes depending on the location and traffic situation. The restrictions will be enforced at different times during the festive days and on immersion day.
The police have also designated a number of No Parking Zones in congested areas, including stretches from Laban Police Station Junction to Circuit House Junction, Howell Road to Batti Bazaar Junction, District Council Point to Kyrbom, Paltan Bazaar area, RR Colony roads and the route from Trenching Ground Road to Jhalupara Point.
In addition, parking and stopping of vehicles within a radius of 100 metres from Puja pandals will not be permitted. Authorities warned that vehicles found violating the restrictions may be challaned, clamped or removed in accordance with the law.
The traffic police have advised the public to carefully study the traffic arrangements, plan their journeys in advance, use alternative routes wherever necessary and make use of authorised parking facilities to avoid inconvenience.
Emergency services, including ambulances and fire service vehicles, will be given priority passage during the festive period. Citizens requiring traffic-related assistance may contact the respective traffic branches or dial the Police Emergency Helpline 112.
