Shillong, Sep 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday inaugurated three Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) to strengthen primary and preventive healthcare in remote areas of the state.
Supported by Altius under its CSR initiative and implemented by Apollo Foundation – Total Health, the MMUs will serve Mawpat, Pynursla in East Khasi Hills and Baghmara in South Garo Hills, covering 93 villages and over 2 lakh people.
Each unit will be staffed by doctors and paramedics and equipped for consultations, basic diagnostics, treatment, EMR services and referrals. A key focus will be screening and management of non-communicable diseases, along with cancer screening and vision care.
Speaking at the launch, Sangma said health and education remain the government’s top priority since 2018, stressing outcomes over optics.
“Launching the ambulance is the easiest part. The real success will come when we save lives… If these lie in some parking lot, this launch will be meaningless,” he said, calling the initiative a game changer for last-mile delivery.
He also flagged the need for better digital connectivity to support tech-enabled health services.
Altius and Apollo Foundation reaffirmed their commitment to complement the state’s public health system.
