Shillong, Sep 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today distributed the one-time relocation grant of Rs 20,000 to relocated vendors at Barik and Dhanketi.
Arts & Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh and officials from the Urban Affairs Department were present on the occasion.
Speaking during the distribution and interaction with vendors, the Chief Minister said relocation was possible because of cooperation from every stakeholder.
“Though it may look like a small and simple step, it is one of the most challenging situations that we have faced because it is not only about development but linked with the livelihood of the people and the overall beautification of the city,” he said.
He said prime locations in the city have been given to vendors to ensure balance between livelihoods and aesthetics of the city and its roads and streets.
He urged tourists and citizens to visit the vending zones, adding that these areas will be developed into lively spaces with toilet facilities, sitting areas, decorative lighting and live performances in the evenings.
The one-time assistance of Rs 20,000 is to support vendors during relocation and transition. Vendors will receive immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer and Rs 2,000 per month for the next five months.
