Shillong, Sep 10: The Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU, observed the 17th Himalayan Day-2026 on the theme ‘Global Warming and the Himalayas’.
Faculty, students, experts and environmentalists deliberated on climate change impacts on the fragile mountain ecosystem and need for sustainable conservation.
Former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. S. Ashutosh in his presidential address, highlighted the fragile and interconnected nature of the mountain ecosystem and the need to translate science into policy.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. K. Barik stressed collective responsibility for biodiversity conservation, stating “Himalayan Day is for Biodiversity Conservation.”
Expert talks were delivered by Prof. S. R. Joshi, NEHU; Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi; Prof. V. P. Sati, Mizoram University; and Dr. Rajesh Joshi, GBPNIHE-Sikkim Regional Centre.
Speakers flagged declining permafrost, anthropogenic pressures and disaster preparedness.
