Shillong, Sep 7: The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI), Barrackpore, organised a ‘fish seed stocking programme’ at Umiam Lake on September 6-7 with the objective of promoting cage culture technology and strengthening livelihood opportunities for tribal women fishers in the region.
The programme was organised by the ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre in Guwahati in collaboration with the Ri-Bhoi Farmers’ Union (RFU) and Meghalaya’s Department of Fisheries under programmes of ICAR-CIFRI.
A total of 12,000 fish fingerlings were stocked in six cages, benefiting 25 tribal women fisher families involved in cage culture at Umiam reservoir. The initiative forms part of ICAR-CIFRI’s efforts to develop and refine scientifically validated cage culture technology suited to the mid-altitude reservoirs of the North East, a press release stated today.
The intervention is expected to enhance fish production, strengthen women-led fisheries-based livelihoods, and promote the wider adoption of sustainable cage aquaculture across the region.
