Shillong, Sep 5: Vice President CP Radhakrishnan will be on a two-day visit to Meghalaya on September 7 and 8, during which he will lay foundation stones for five major infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,010.95 crore, officials said on Saturday.
According to the official press release, all five projects have been tendered and will be taken up under different central schemes.
The largest among them is the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase-II (Part A) costing Rs 850.58 crore, to be funded under the Urban Challenge Fund of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The project aims to establish a modern, city-scale water supply network for New Shillong City and 32 adjoining villages with 24×7 safe drinking water for 4.34 lakh people. It will introduce Meghalaya’s first smart metering system and will be integrated with the Integrated Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring.
Also to be taken up is the construction of a 110-metre major bridge over the Umngot River on the Jongksha–Kharang–Dienglieng–Nongjrong–Moodymmai–Wahiajer road at a cost of Rs 21.86 crore under NESIDS. The bridge will benefit around 28,479 people across 14 villages in Mawkynrew Block and improve inter-district movement between East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills, besides creating an alternative road link between Shillong and Jowai.
Among the projects is a 13.50 km road from Umsen to Barapathar via Pilangku-A, Jyrmang, Chibra and Mawiong costing Rs 56.01 crore under NESIDS. The all-weather road will benefit about 5,705 people across 21 villages in Jirang and Umling Blocks of Ri-Bhoi and strengthen interstate connectivity with Assam.
The list includes a 30-bedded AYUSH facility at Shillong Civil Hospital costing Rs 10 crore, funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs under Article 275(1). The G+2 facility will provide Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Yoga and Naturopathy, Panchakarma, physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.
Another key project is the 2×50 MVA, 132/33 kV substation at Mawkhanu with 132 kV double-circuit Saisiej–Mawkhanu line and GIS bay at Saisiej costing Rs 72.50 crore under PM-DevINE to ensure stable power supply for New Shillong City.
