Shillong, Sep 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has warned it will lift its temporary suspension of agitation and resume protests if the government fails to deliver on its assurances.
The decision was taken at a central executive committee meeting held on Friday. The KSU said it will monitor five assurances given by the government during talks on August 26 at the Secretariat, including expediting facilitation centres at Umling and Ratacherra and implementing the Migrant Workmen Act within 20 days.
The union condemned what it called daily registration of cases against its leaders and the arrest of Samuel Kharbani, general secretary of KSU South Shillong Circle, over its protest against alleged illegal construction of a mandir inside the CBI office, a government building.
It alleged police acted arbitrarily after its peaceful bike rally on August 19, arresting members without evidence to please some quarters, while failing to arrest those who vandalised vehicles and dug up public roads to attack people going to oppose the Shree Cement public hearing at Lum Syrman, Elaka Nongkhlieh on July 30-31.
Even two months after the incident, not a single attacker has been arrested, KSU alleged, questioning if the law is equal for all.
It gave the government three days to arrest the culprits, including any government personnel involved, or it will explore other means.
“If no concrete steps are shown, KSU will resume public agitation,” KSU Assistant General Secretary Pynshaiborlang Rani said.
