Shillong, Aug 18: Police seized 1.439 kg of suspected cannabis and detained a 53-year-old man from Assam during a routine naka checking at Jhunjhuni Tri-Junction in South West Garo Hills, officials said.
A team from Kalaichar Police Patrol Post intercepted Abdul Zaher, a resident of Jhagarchar, Kakripara, Mankachar, as part of intensified border surveillance. The contraband was recovered from his possession.
Zaher has been taken into custody and a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma said the seizure is part of the district police’s ongoing efforts to check inter-state movement of drugs at vulnerable border points.
“Naka checks will continue at strategic locations like Jhunjhuni Tri-Junction, a key transit route connecting Meghalaya and Assam,” Varma said.
Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and share information on suspected drug-related activities with the nearest police station.
