Shillong, Aug 13: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has given the state government 10 days to act on the proposed 217.394-hectare Lum Syrman limestone mining project of Shree Cement in East Jaiñtia Hills, warning it will launch democratic protests if no action is taken.
Led by General Secretary Wanshwa Suting, the JNC submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, expressing serious concern over the project.
The council demanded that the customary, possession, cultivation and land rights of affected landowners and farmers of Sutnga and Nongkhlieh Elakas be protected and preserved before any irreversible step is taken for the project.
It has sought a time-bound and transparent verification of revenue, registration, customary and other records relating to Lum Syrman. The JNC also said farmers who have depended on the area for decades cannot be ignored in the name of mineral development, and called for safeguarding their cultivation rights. Where any landowner or farmer is deprived of land or livelihood lawfully, the JNC demanded “fair and lawful compensation.”
Speaking to reporters, Suting alleged the state government was favouring cement companies to the extent of blocking residents from attending the public hearing held on July 31.
“If the government is confident that everything has been done fairly and transparently, then why should affected landholders face obstacles in exercising their right to participate,” he questioned.
The JNC has also demanded a thorough examination of the July 31 public hearing, including attendance, objections, complaints and videographic records. It asked for a fresh consultation if procedural deficiencies are found.
The council clarified that its stand was not against development. “This is a fight for justice, transparency and the rights of the people whose land and livelihood are at stake,” Suting said.
The JNC said it will continue to pursue the matter through lawful and constitutional means and will stand with the affected landowners and farmers of Lum Syrman until their concerns are addressed.
