Shillong, Jul 30: The Shillong Bar Association on Thursday said it will issue a show cause notice to senior advocate A.H. Hazarika and may suspend his membership over allegations of misconduct against a lady intern.
The claims against Hazarika went viral on social media on July 28. At an emergent executive committee meeting, the association said such conduct, if proven, violates professional ethics, constitutional values and human dignity, and is “wholly unacceptable”.
It added that further action will depend on a police investigation and an inquiry by the State Bar Council’s disciplinary committee.
The association also voiced concern over reports that non-state actors allegedly apprehended, assaulted and paraded Hazarika from his Keating Road office to Sadar Police Station.
“No individual deserves such treatment. Taking the law into one’s own hands undermines the rule of law and constitutional governance,” it said.
The Association called for a lawful, impartial and expeditious probe into both the alleged misconduct and the reported vigilantism through proper judicial and legal channels.
