Shillong, Jul 18: The College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University, Tura inaugurated a Custom Hiring Centre (CHC) and released Comilla cotton sanitary napkins at Darechikgre playground, Gambegre block.
The program was organized by AICRP-Women in Agriculture, ICAR-CIWA, Bhubaneswar.
Gambegre MLA Dr. Mehtab Chande A. Sangma, who inaugurated the CHC, said the centre will bring services directly to villages and bring needed changes to the area.
Dr. Sangma urged farmers to grow more Comilla cotton, calling it a high-quality, high-value crop whose cultivation has declined. She added that a PRIME centre will be set up in the area soon.
Project Head of PRIME Minha Riyaz Khan said the state government’s PRIME RURAL initiative will provide training, equipment and branding support at doorsteps. She cited the example of a beneficiary whose annual income rose from Rs 5,000 to Rs 5 lakh.
Faculty, students and villagers from Darechikgre and nearby areas attended. A villager from Dighalpara CHC also shared experiences during the programme.
Sanitary napkins made from Comilla cotton and agricultural inputs were also distributed to beneficiaries. The napkins were developed by CAU (I), Tura.
