Shillong, Jul 15: Out of 60 sites, 46 sites have been identified across four districts of the state for establishing crematoriums.
In a report submitted before the Meghalaya High Court, the state government said the crematoriums will be established in East Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and South West Khasi Hills districts.
A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh examined the progress following the court’s directives on June 3, 2026.
The court noted that ₹1 lakh per site has been sanctioned and released to the district administration for establishing the crematoriums.
In East Khasi Hills, out of the total 43 sites, 34 have been identified and an amount of ₹34 lakhs have been released. In Eastern West Khasi Hills three out of eight sites have been identified with a sanctioned budget of ₹3 lakhs. In Ri Bhoi six sites have been identified and sanctioned and three in South West Khasi Hills.
The government informed the court that verification of other sites is still in progress. In addition, six sites are yet to be identified for creation of additional crematorium.
