Shillong, Jul 11: The district administrators across the state have been directed to be on high alert for rescue and relief operations, as widespread rainfall has raised concerns across the state.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday chaired a review meeting with deputy commissioners to assess the ongoing impact of the continuous monsoon rain in Meghalaya.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Meghalaya, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated areas until around July 15.
The State Disaster Management Authority reported that this current monsoon spell, which began in the first week of July, has already affected 32 villages, especially in the Garo Hills and parts of the Khasi Hills. Incidents of landslides, landslips, flash floods, and localized flooding have been recorded, although, fortunately, no loss of life has been reported.
During the meeting, the chief minister stressed on the need for effective coordination among district administrations, block-level response teams, and line departments to ensure swift response to any emergencies. He instructed that field personnel and necessary machinery be on standby for immediate action, specifically regarding the restoration of road connectivity affected by the monsoon.
He expressed particular concern for the erosion around the Mineng Bailey Bridge near Gasuapara in South Garo Hills district and ordered that inspection and temporary restoration be completed quickly.
The chief minister further directed that relief and assistance reach affected families without delay, essential supplies and services be maintained, and districts continue to monitor the situation with regular reporting to the state.
The public has been urged to exercise caution: avoid landslide-prone stretches and flooded streams, heed local advisories, and postpone non-essential travel on hill roads during heavy rain. Caution towards lightning safety during thunderstorms was also advised.
Restoration and relief work is ongoing and the situation continues to be monitored closely. Further updates will be issued as required, the government said.
