Shillong, Jun 30: The National Statistics Office (Field Operations Division), Regional Office Shillong, under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), commemorated the 20th National Statistics Day at Shillong College Auditorium.
The event paid tribute to the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a pioneer in the Indian statistical system.
The programme centred around the theme “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data,” which underscored the increasing relevance of administrative data in promoting evidence-based policymaking, governance, and efficient public service delivery.
During her inaugural address, Vice Principal of Shillong College E.N. Dkhar emphasised the importance of Statistics Day and acknowledged the lasting contributions of Prof. Mahalanobis. She motivated students to engage in the discussions while appreciating the vital role statistics plays in solving real-world challenges.
Deputy Director General of NSO (FOD) Monojit Das highlighted that administrative data from routine governance has transformed into a cornerstone of evidence-based policymaking. He called for the integration of datasets across various departments while stressing the need for legal and ethical safeguards to protect individual privacy.
Chief guest Prof. Bishal Gurung of the North Eastern Hill University discussed the significance of administrative data in research and its growing relevance to public policy. He advocated for introducing statistics as a separate subject in schools to enhance statistical literacy.
The event also featured presentations on the harmonisation of administrative data initiatives in Meghalaya by Statistical Officer Jerrymaya Lyngdoh. Deputy Director, NSO (FOD) O. Patton also made a presentation on the National Sample Survey and its contribution to the country’s official statistical system, besides highlighting career opportunities in the field of Statistics.
An extempore speech competition was held, showcasing student engagement in discussing the importance of data, with winners from St. Anthony’s College and Shillong College.
