Shillong, Jun 29: Three sawmills were shut down in the Chibinang-Bolarbita and Selsella areas by the Forest Department during a two-day enforcement drive against illegal timber operations in West Garo Hills district.
The drive was carried out by the office of the Range Forest Officer, Hollaidonga Range, under the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), West & South-West Garo Hills (Territorial) Division on June 23 and June 29 following credible intelligence.
Officials said sawmills operating under makeshift sheds were dismantled, including heavy-duty bandsaw assemblies and driving wheels. A substantial quantity of illegally procured timber logs was also seized.
The department confiscated three complete sawmill machine sets and additional components, including one electric motor, one platform, and one driving wheel.
DFO, Territorial Rupankar K Marak said stringent enforcement drive against illegal sawmills across the district will continue. The department reiterated its commitment to protecting forest resources and taking legal action against those involved in illegal logging and unauthorised sawmill operations.
