Shillong, Jun 27: The Election Commission of India has directed a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across all states. In Meghalaya, the exercise will be carried out in five Assembly constituencies of West Jaintia Hills — Nartiang, Jowai, Raliang, Mowkaiaw, and Amlarem.
The Deputy Commissioner (Election), West Jaintia Hills, said Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house enumeration from June 30 to July 29, 2026. During the drive, every existing elector will be given an Enumeration Form by the BLO. One filled copy will be collected by the BLO, while the second copy will be retained by the elector as acknowledgement.
Based on the forms, Electoral Registration Officers will prepare a Draft Electoral Roll for publication on August 5, 2026. The period for filing claims and objections will run from August 5 to September 4, 2026, with disposal scheduled till October 3.
The final Electoral Roll, with October 1, 2026 as the qualifying date, will be published on October 7, 2026.
The Deputy Commissioner has urged all eligible electors to cooperate with BLOs and the district administration to ensure the successful completion of SIR 2026.
SIR in South West Garo Hills, 1,200 electors per polling stations
The Election Commission of India has directed the conduct of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls in Meghalaya to ensure accuracy and integrity of the voter list. The District Election Officer, South West Garo Hills, informed that the exercise will be carried out under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
The qualifying date for the revision is October 1, 2026. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house verification from June 30 to July 29, 2026, and provide Enumeration Forms to all existing electors. Electors must fill the form and return one copy to the BLO. An online facility for submitting the form will also be available during the period.
The draft electoral roll will be published on August 5, 2026. Claims and objections can be filed from August 5 to September 4, 2026. After disposal of claims, the final electoral roll will be published on October 7, 2026.
To assist electors, voter lists from the last SIR conducted in 2005 have been uploaded on the South West Garo Hills district website. Those whose names are missing from the 2005 roll but whose parents’ names appear must provide parent details in the form. No supporting documents need to be submitted with it.
The ECI has also rationalized polling stations, reducing the maximum electors per station from 1,500 to 1,200 for better voter convenience. The District Election Officer said regular meetings will be held with recognized political parties, with the first briefing scheduled next week. Electors have been urged to cooperate with BLOs during verification to ensure an error-free electoral roll.
