Shillong, Jun 27: The Mrong Mahari Association organized a one-day Workshop on Garo Customary Usages at the District Auditorium here on Saturday, focusing on traditional practices linked to funeral rites and community discourse.
Sessions covered customs including Manggisi Auata, Ma·gual, Chikitra, Delang Roa, Ja’ragata, Rongdik Dokprua, Debra Ba·a, Me·mang Dila, and Ganchri Pinchri. Resource speaker Rakkan M. Sangma, Secretary of Garo Heritage Village, led the deliberations.
The programme drew academicians, economists, PhD and undergraduate students, and was attended by Traffic SP Rupam R. Marak.
Speaking to the media, Sangma said the workshop aimed to help younger Garo understand their roots amid growing concern over eroding cultural practices. He noted that smartphone use was pulling youth away from traditional songs and customs, even in Garo villages. “Every community has its own identity. The objective is to protect and preserve the rich Garo heritage,” he said.
The association said discussions from the workshop will be taken forward among participants to strengthen awareness of Garo identity and traditions.
