Shillong, Jun 21: The Khasi Jaiñtia Welfare Association Research Cell (KJWARC) organised a panel discussion titled ‘Ki Dak AB u Thomas Jones: Ka Jinglong Kawei Ka Jaitbynriew Khasi Baiar’ here on Saturday as part of the observance of Thomas Jones Day 2026.
The programme was held on June 20, ahead of the actual Thomas Jones Day on June 22. Around 100 participants attended, including students, researchers, teachers, civil society leaders and writers.
The inaugural session was chaired by KJWARC secretary SS Rynjah. KJWARC chairman Prof SS Majaw, in his address, highlighted Thomas Jones’ contribution to Khasi society, particularly through the development of the Khasi written language. Chief guest Rev OL Snaitang spoke on the role of language, clan and culture in the unity of the Khasi race.
The book ‘Pan Kwah: Jah Kwah’ by AJ Lymba was also released during the event.
The second session featured a panel discussion moderated by journalist Kyrmen Uriah. Panelists included Rev RK Sutnga of Sutnga Presbytery; Bankam Kupar Lyngdoh, assistant teacher at Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School in Sohra; Mankular Lamin Gashnga, editor of Kemmo Por; Fabian Lyngdoh, former MDC and former KHADC Chairman; and Kular Khongjirem, senior teacher at KJP Girls’ Higher Secondary School.
The discussion focused on the Khasi language as a unifying force. Panelists noted Jones’ role in providing a written script that fostered a shared linguistic identity across the Khasi Hills. They said dialects enrich the language and reflect cultural diversity, but should not become barriers to unity. Speakers stressed that the standard Khasi language serves as a common platform for communication, education, literature and social cohesion.
Panelists agreed that preserving local dialects while promoting a shared linguistic framework is key to uniting the Khasi race across geographical and social boundaries. They said language remains one of the strongest bonds for the Khasi people and that Jones’ legacy continues to inspire unity and cultural preservation.
