Shillong, Jun 18: The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Nengkra sub unit has raised a critical public safety issue concerning a high-voltage distribution transformer located at Nengkra Watregittim.
The transformer is alarmingly situated near the main road, close to Mount Sinai Secondary School, and poses serious risks to students and local residents, sub unit president Bebetho R. Marak said.
He said the installation of the transformer lacks any protective safety wall, fencing, or barricades that expose individuals to the risk of accidental contact with the electrical equipment. Since children frequently pass and play in the area, the likelihood of accidents significantly increases. Furthermore, heavy rainfall and potential waterlogging around the transformer could create hazardous conditions, heightening the risk of electrical leakage and accidents, he added.
AHAM has formally addressed their concerns to the Executive Engineer of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MEPDCL) in Williamnagar, urging for the construction of protective fencing around the transformer, installation of danger signs, and a thorough safety assessment of the transformer site.
Ensuring compliance with established electrical safety norms is critical for protecting the lives of the community, the organisation stressed.
