Shillong, Jun 12: Infrastructure for the Tura Medical College is 95 percent in place, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said today.
He added that the recruitment process for faculty members has been initiated and advertisements for various teaching positions have been issued. However, the response from prospective applicants has so far been below expectations. This is a regular refrain from the state government, which wanted to use a public-private partnership (PPP) model for the college because of its staffing concerns. However, public pressure forced the government to run the college on its own.
Despite the slow response, Shylla said the government remains hopeful of filling the required faculty positions and moving ahead with the operationalisation of the institution next year.
Meanwhile, the Shillong Medical College – also under full state control – is running despite a lack of formal inauguration. The Meghalaya government is keen on the college being opened by the Prime Minister but his office has yet to lock down on a date.
