Shillong, Jun 3: Local residents of Selsella Pathangre in the West Garo Hills district have raised concerns about environmental pollution caused by a nearby poultry farm.
Through the All Selsella NGOs’ Alliance, they have sought immediate intervention of the district administration to address the pressing issues of air contamination and river pollution, particularly during the monsoon season.
The community has reported that the unscientific management of poultry waste at the farm is resulting in serious health hazards. The deposition of poultry droppings creates an unbearable stench that permeates through surrounding villages. This not only affects the quality of life but also poses a significant threat to public health and local ecosystems.
In a petition to the Deputy Commissioner, general secretary of the All Selsella NGOs’ Alliance, Changle T Sangma expressed support for local entrepreneurship. However, he said the residents firmly contend that the poultry farm must implement scientifically-based management practices to prevent odour and toxic emissions from impacting the community.
Sangma highlighted that current waste disposal methods violate both the Environment Protection Act of 1986 and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974. He said residents are calling for prompt legal action and stringent directives to ensure that proper waste treatment systems are installed immediately, safeguarding the health and environment of the local populace.
