Shillong, May 30: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla today assured the public of the state government’s stance of zero tolerance towards any form of misconduct against women athletes.
He said the government is committed to addressing the serious issue of alleged sexual harassment of women cricketers.
The allegation was raised by the cricketers, who claim that their complaints against the coach and manager of the U–23 women‘s T20 team that took part in a BCCI tournament last year were disregarded by former MCA office-bearers. They have been formally submitted to the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.
“We will ensure that such incidents do not happen, whether in cricket or any other sports association or anywhere else” Shylla told reporters.
Shylla however said that the government would not intervene immediately, as the current MCA president, James PK Sangma, has taken measures to address these allegations. He said inquiry is presently underway to investigate the claims.
He urged for patience, stating it would be inappropriate to comment further until the findings are disclosed to the public.
The government would await the conclusion of the investigation, and taking necessary actions based on its outcome, he added.
