Shillong, May 19: The District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) of West Garo Hills has taken an innovative approach to educate students about child protection laws by using street plays and interactive legal corners, shifting from traditional classroom lectures into engaging outreach programs.
The focal point of the outreach was the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The program featured public screenings and performances by assistant legal aid defense counsels, Jingjang Ch. Marak and Namsrang Ch. Momin.
Through these captivating nukkad nataks, essential provisions of the POCSO Act and laws related to domestic violence were explained in a student-friendly manner, making it easier for young minds to grasp the content.
To further enhance legal awareness, a legal corner was established by Jericho R Marak, assistant legal aid defence counsel, ensuring that students have ongoing access to vital legal information and materials.
SDPO Sadar, Raksamgre Sahithya Pavana Sai Kasiraju in his session, highlighted the significance of the POCSO Act. Representatives from the District Child Protection Unit, Tura, also spoke about safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation.
Assistant legal aid defence counsel Grangchira Ch. Marak introduced the NALSA (JAGRITI – Justice Awareness for Grassroots Information and Transparency Initiative) Scheme, 2025.
The DLSA said the campaign will expand beyond schools to villages. Similar programmes are planned at Jengjal Megapgre, Dorenggre, and Bidanchi Higher Secondary School, Tura.
