Shillong, May 19: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated a complex for the newly relocated 41 Meghalaya Battalion NCC at Cherangre in Tura.
The battalion traces its roots back to the establishment of the 15 Assam Artillery Battery NCC on June 3, 1961, and was upgraded to the 41 Meghalaya Battalion NCC in October 2020.
The relocation of the battalion from Shillong to Tura took place on March 3, 2026. With the government providing additional infrastructure support, including buildings and land, the NCC is poised to strengthen its operational requirements and outreach across the Garo Hills region.
Under the border area expansion plan, the unit has significantly expanded its outreach from three colleges and six schools to seven colleges and 18 schools. The battalion currently comprises seven companies with 1,120 cadets and 24 troops, with approximately 2,400 cadets.
In his address, the chief minister highlighted the significant role of the NCC in shaping the character and leadership qualities among the youth.
Underlining the demographic advantage of Meghalaya, where a majority of the population is under 35, Sangma laid out the government’s commitment to youth development as a priority. He spoke about the youth and sports policy, which offers a roadmap integrating various fields such as education, sports, and entrepreneurship.
He expressed confidence in the potential of Meghalaya’s youth, asserting that with the right support and opportunities, they can excel in a global arena. “This is not merely an expenditure; it is an investment in our future,” he said.
