Shillong, May 11: The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has voiced objections regarding the appointments of retired officials in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
According to the HYC, two office orders were issued on March 26, 2026, and May 5, 2026, to effect these appointments. The organisation believes that re-engaging retired personnel undermines job prospects for the educated youth in the state.
With thousands of educated and unemployed youths in Meghalaya, the HYC asserts that such appointments send a discouraging message. “At a time when many qualified young people are waiting for fair opportunities in government institutions, the repeated engagement of retired individuals blocks opportunities for fresh recruitment, promotion, and institutional growth,” HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said.
Pointing out that public institutions like the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly should prioritise transparency, accountability, and fairness in their hiring processes, he said the increasing trend of post-retirement appointments risks fostering a culture of exclusivity within government offices, where opportunities are concentrated among a few.
The HYC has demanded a thorough review of the appointments, public disclosure of the process and justification behind such engagements and greater prioritisation for recruitment and promotion of eligible serving staff and qualified local youth and a transparent policy regulating post-retirement appointments in government institutions.
